Happy New Year to all who visit this little corner of the cyberspace world. I hope you all had a wonderful, restful Holiday! After much consideration I have decided that 2010 will bring a lot of changes for Bishop Images. I have to say that I have honestly seriously considered closing up shop and moving on, BUT...

I love photography and I'm not ready yet to throw in the towel. Hopefully with the new changes I plan on implementing I will never feel that way again. Burn-out and poor health can lead to some crazy decisions.

Soon Bishop Images will have a reinvented website, a totally new blog, some new business partners instead of "I" it will be "WE" , and WE will offer a new commercial services along with continuing with various portrait services. We will be implementing a different approach to pricing photographic services as well. Check back soon....

Just thought I would update a bit. I have so many fun sessions to post and I will get to that soon. The Holiday rush at it's peak right now and I am scrambling to keep up. I am going to take a few weeks in December and revisit why I love photography and think about how to refocus (ha,ha-literally) on what really makes me happy. There are so many ULTRA talented photographers, especially in Utah. It seems like everyday I hear about another friend who is starting a photography business, and it is VERY competitive. Which makes lots of hours photographing, lots of hours editing, lots of hours managing the business end (which I am horrible at!)

Bottom line: I love to be behind the camera, and still plan on photographing, but I need to think things to the next level or get out of the game! I have invested mucho dinero in equipment over the last year and have photograph some of my best work yet, but I am feeling like something is missing for me...not sure what next year will bring!

This is a MEGA post...my camera loved this bride! I met this couple pretty much the day of their wedding. Colton installed the hardwood floors in my home in April and remembered that I was a photographer, and things worked out so I could photograph their wedding. It is always a challenging experience to photograph someone's wedding when you have not met them before, and you are unfamiliar with the location. However these two made my job easy. Kyra is absolutely beautiful and she is ultra photogenic!! Their wedding was at a beautiful home in Mapleton, Utah. I had never been there before but after leaving I told my husband that I'd love to live in that area, it had such a nice country feeling to it.

Colton has one son, and Krya has two engergetic boys. These three boys were darling. Krya's boys walked her down the aisle. I loved the "laid back" feeling of this wedding. It was still very elegant but had a very relaxed down to earth feeling. Colton's friend came to pick them up in a helicopter! That was a first for me, I've seen lots of horse drawn carriages, fancy cars, and what not but the helicopter was SWEET! Congrats guys, I wish you the best in the future!

So last year due to the "sluggish" economy I offered some specials. Well now the economy is in the toilet and I still want to offer cards so here is the deal:

I am offering Christmas cards this year at my cost...$1.00 each
(meaning you pay what I pay to have unique and fabulous cards)

All cards are 5x7 in size and are press printed on BOTH sides. One side is the design of the card you choose, and the backside can be a 5x7 of your favorite image or a matching design...plain 5x7 images can be framed.
All cards come with envelopes.
All cards are press printed on beautiful pearl paper (it is amazing!)
All cards must be images that I have taken for you.
All card colors can be changed and custom text is available.
The cards come in increments of 25. For example if you need 39 cards, you would have to order 50.

The Tsandes family session was a lot of fun. I was working solo, so that is always a challenge especially when photographing children I love the 2nd to last photograph because it shows how silly kiddos can be after being chased by a camera for an hour!

Is this not one of the most beautiful little babies ever? Newborn photography is so challenging but this little one made my job easy.

I've been asked a lot about how I "go about" photographing a newborn session.

My answer: I prefer to photograph infants in their own home. So I haul all of my stuff to the client's home, lights (if needed) and lots of other stuff. I am always looking for something different and new. I love to use textured material or elements from the clients home. It is always important to find out if there is a certain outfit the baby needs to be photographed in, however most of the time the baby is just in their diaper. You can not rush when photographing a newborn so I plan on 1-3 hours depending on feeding, etc. You have to keep baby warm and comfy. I have a lot of ideas I am going to try to incorporate in my upcoming sessions. and I will be offering a Baby's 1st year package that includes a newborn session (first 4 weeks), 3 month, 6 month, 9 month, and 1 year session so check back for details!

I love this family. I would really love to photograph each individual family on a single family session when we have more time. Trying to keep everyone happy, clean, and content while photographing all the different family groups can be a real challenge. I have had some very eventful photo sessions lately too. After this session I went back to my car to find my window had been smashed in and my purse stolen. I knew I should have taken in with me but I was already caring a huge camera bag, light stands, and other equipment so I left it in the car (under a blanket). Someone must have needed my belongings more that myself.

Isn't it funny how little newborns look like cute little "old men" sometimes? This little guy is so sweet and cuddly, and I love his wrinkly forehead. This is my good friend and amazing assistant Lyndee's one week old little man. He looks just like his older brother who is just as darling.

My Mom made the brown little cacoon we stuffed him in. I think we will have a lot of fun playing photography games with this little one.

This is a first for me. I designed a simple coffee table guestbook for Katie and Matt's upcoming wedding. Their wedding colors are purple & orange so I incorporated them. What a great way to display your engagement images and read the "well wishes" from their wedding reception.

FYI-I can't believe I have not posted earlier, we are already just about 1/2 way through October. I have had very sick kids and have just been editing like crazy in any spare time. Lots of fun posts coming up!

Such a cute couple, it was great getting to know them better. We ate some great fish tacos then headed to the lake. When we got there we were in the middle of a big "rave" concert. So here is Matt & Katie in the nice dress clothes, and this big rave with people wearing all sorts of "swim suit" looking stuff. We were in the minority for sure! Sunflower Days {mini sessions}

Introducing MINI SESSIONS from Bishop Images. Sunflower Days will be ONE of THREE different mini sessions offered in the next 3 months. Sunflower Days in September, Pumpkin Days in October, and Snow Days in late November/early December.

A mini session is a 30 minute session at a place designated by me the photographer, on specific dates (A regular portrait session is 90 minutes). During this MINI session we will create a family portrait, a couple image (M&D), individuals of the kids, and whatever else we can squeeze in in 30 minutes.

The cost is $100 and includes:

the 30 minute session.
online gallery to view images (you can post your images on facebook from your gallery.)
25- 5x7 double-sided press printed Christmas cards & THREE retouched digital negatives (high resolution files) on a CD
-or- instead of the Christmas cards you will receive FIVE retouched digital negatives (high resolution files) on a CD.

Q & A

So I have been getting some emails lately asking how I go about things, and a bunch of other general questions. I thought I would take a few minutes to answer some.

Q#1. What type of camera do you have?

A: I have a few cameras that I use. My main body is a Nikon D700. I also use a Fuji S5. I would like to get my hands on a Nikon D3x.

Q#2. What type of lenses do you use?

A: Lyndee (my awesome assistant) and I have collected some great new lenses. We have a

28-70mm F2.8, 15-55mm F2.8, 70-200mm F2.8 (my personal favorite), 85mm F1.8, 50mm F1.4, 60mm F2.8 macro, and a lens baby kit.

Q#3. Do you use a lot of Photoshop?

A: I use Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Photoshop. My rule of thumb is to try and only spend the same amount of time in post production that I did during the actual session. Sometimes I spend more, sometimes I spend less. I would say that I use Lightroom 70% of the time and Photoshop 30%. I have everything in actions and presets but sometimes I just have to add my own personal touch.

Q#4. Do you use light modifiers and/or flash?

A: Of course I do. Now, every situation is different and every subject is different so I think it is important to understand how to use anything...I have even used a flashlight when needed. The last few shoots I have been using an off camera light set up because I am finding that I am really liking having a little bit of "directional" fill light for portraits. Directional meaning that I can move the light where I want it and create contrast and depth. I use Nikon Speedlights, a variety of softboxes and umbrellas, and pocket wizards for wireless transmitting. I also use reflectors, but most importantly I look for natural reflectors and fill when on location. I have some studio light too but it is pretty rare that I get it out. Someday I will have a formal studio.

Q#5. What is your favorite and least favorite thing to photograph?

A: Hmm...I just love pretty much everything about photography. Hands down my favorite thing to photograph is High School Seniors, and Engagement sessions. Why? Because High School Seniors are so into fashion and themselves that they really put a lot of thought and effort into the session. Engagement sessions because it just plain rocks when two people are head over heels in love. Someday I would like to expand into a little commercial photography too and do a lot of still products and such too.

My least favorite is probably Large Family Sessions. I still enjoy photographing large families but it is hard to really feel creative when creating that type of portrait. But everyone needs a family photo for Grandma!

Q#6. How to you balance photography and everyday life?

A: Hard one to answer, I am not very good at the balancing act...but I am learning quickly. I have been photographing people for about 7 years and I do love it! I started with the big Medium Format Film cameras after graduation and then moved into the digital era. I've never really "pushed" my business until last year, I took out a small business loan invested in more equipment and got serious about making this a viable business. I have the necessary experience and education, but I have not been able to master all of the business aspects I need to. Anyone with children knows that it is hard to work from home. I try to dedicate certain days to photography, and schedule things around my family's events. I've also learned to say "No" a lot more than I did before.

Oooohhhh...I could just eat this little one up! She was just 48 hours old when we took these images. I photographed 3 babies this week this 2 day old cute, a 4 week old little man, and my 5 week old niece. Baby Brynlie was the youngest but the chubbiest of the three. What a sweet little one!

I just had to post these, I was at Intermountain Medical Center taking pictures of my new little niece, and quickly snapped some images of 2 of my 3 kiddos. My oldest did not want her picture taken, and I made my 7 year old smile for me so I could document his toothless grin. Aren't they cute? They get it ALL from their Dad!

This was an fun wedding to shoot. Megan is THE MOST laid back bride I have ever photographed, what a beautiful bride she is. The wedding was held in her parents home, and the reception in their beautiful back yard. The food was amazing (thanks Josselyn), and Lyndee and I had a good time as usual. It got pretty windy so using the lightboxes was pretty interesting, I am thinking I need to get some sand bags to hold them down. I am learning to make the best of every situation, no matter the time of day. I finally feel like I have the necessary equipment to achieve a certain professional look no matter the circumstances (full sun, low light, etc.)

I book THREE weddings over the past 10 days, and I am very excited to shoot each one of them!

Chris was a good sport, and let me make him play "model" for an hour or so. I have started to use an off camera fill light for a lot of portrait work and I am loving it. I hate packing around the softbox and stand, but for me it makes a big difference in the finished portrait. I use available light most of the time but the softbox just adds that extra fill that sometimes a reflector can not. Sadly though Chris was one of my only "Senior" sessions this year. I've only received one call for the free session. I will still honor that request if anyone has a High School Senior that still wants some photos done!

This is the 3rd time I have had the privilege of photographing this family in the past year. They have three beautiful brown eyed girls, the oldest named Sadie. Sadie has terminal brain cancer, a tumor called DIPG (diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma). This last session Sadie was unable to move off of the couch so we set up a session around her. What a champion she is, she has the cutest giggle ever!

I have shed many tears for this family, and my own children pray daily that Sadie will be comfortable and feel better. It is hard to understand why these types of things happen, especially to a child. This family has and is handling this trial with the most amazing faith, and Sadie's story and her family's willingness to share is a blessing to us all. We love you Sadie and we are so proud of you! Zach & Tiff you are such an example to me. I will never forget the opportunity you have given me to get to know your sweet little gals.

This is Sadie's "lambey" that has been through a lot of treatments with her.

Thomas and Patrick are two of my favorite little guys (my nephews). I got to watch them for 6 weeks last year and I really grew to love them so much. I love taking pictures of newborns... they are so yummy and sweet. I've had some questions asked on how I "go about the session." I like to photograph a newborn in their home, because I just think it is easier to work around their schedule and comfort zone. I always try to photograph within the 1st TWO weeks after birth, because they change so much and after that they do not like to be folded like a pancake. I prefer window light but I do take a strobe just in case. I am always open to new ideas but I think keeping it simple is always best. I love this little one's sweet chubby cheeks, I just want to kiss them!

Here is a little session from a while back that I just realized I never posted (sorry Nancy!). These are some very fun kids. The twins are pretty shy but when they feel comfortable enough they are just sweet. The oldest is working on becoming a photographer, and the youngest is a very polite little man! It was good to get to know your family better. I should come take pictures of your portraits on your walls, they look great!

January Weddings can be a challenge, but these two love birds made my work easy. I was sporting my new Nikon D700 and had a lot of fun at work. Michelle is a take charge kind of girl and she has some great dance moves... what a fun couple. I love the shot of the bouquet toss. There were more images in the series but I chose the 2 that tell the story the best. The little girls were so excited to catch the bouquet and when they did not wind up with the flowers, they were pretty mad! Lyndee did and awesome job with the details and of course everything else she shot. I think she enjoyed shooting with a faster camera this time!

Finally, a day when I can sit down to blog. This family has some smoking eyes...this is another late fall session I shot. I am missing the leafs on trees and can not wait for Spring. Spring family sessions are starting to fill up, and I have had several people mention in passing that they want to schedule a session. I am offering 2 different types of sessions:

Child session (1-4 children)
30-60 minute session
I was planning on getting some baby chicks, a little bunny, and some fun Easter eggs for the kids to play with during the session. Urban, rustic or Studio setting.
*includes 1-2 outfit changes, images of kids together, images of kids alone)

Family session (parents and children)
60-90 minute session
*includes 1-2 outfit changes and 2 locations. Several different images of entire family together, kids together, kids individual, and Mom/Dad together.

Wow, I have been making some changes on my blog and on my website (thanks to some constructive advice). It is amazing how the most simple of things can take an gigantic amount of time. Here are some images of my own sweet little family.

I have to admit...I am very pleased with this session. What a beautiful,and very stylish bride! We had some great locations, and she just had a natural way of "working it" in front of the camera. Lyndee my awesome assistant help me and we used some of the off camera lighting I have been learning more about and I love the results. Michelle's sister Amber is getting a free family portrait session for the referral. I know a lot of people get engaged around the Holidays so if you know anyone who is getting married and looking for a photographer send them my way...

Being around these four kids makes me want to have another one. However I have 2 girls and one boy and I know that if I have another baby it will be another "princess". I've heard people say "girls are easier to raise vs. rowdy boys," but I beg to differ...GIRLS are just so stinkin' emotional and dramatic!

I was working solo (no assistant) on this shoot and I used a speedlight off camera with an large umbrella for a fill light, since there was so much contrast between the shadow and highlight. It was fun except for when the wind blew it over!

Does it seem like there are a lot more TWINS other multiple births these days? This past year I have photographed over 10 set's of twins and one set of triplets. This family is one of those families that have been blessed with a set of very cute twin boys. I have three children and for me it is quite a handful. In late July and August I had the opportunity to babysit my 2 year old and 4 month old nephew for 6 weeks. Thank Heavens my older 2 kids were in school during that time, but my own 2 year old was at home with us. So I had THREE kids that were 2 & under... my hat goes off to you ladies who have any children that close in age. It was fun, but man I do not think I have ever been more tired!

Congratulations to this very fun couple. Chris & Emily will be married soon and will start their new life together with their 9 children. Another Family I just totally adore. I have had the privilege of being around these kids pretty often. I can not imagine what a challenge is must be to have THREE very active triplet girls, and the boys are ALL good looking kids too! It is that time of year again. Here are the 12 Christmas cards I will be offering this year. After much consideration and due to the fact that everyone's wallets are a little bit tighter this year, I have come up with 2 options for printing Christmas cards.

All cards are 5x7 in size and come with envelopes.
All cards must be images that I have taken for you.
All card colors can be changed and custom text is available.

Option #1- DOUBLE SIDED press printed cards.- $1.50 per card (increments of 25 only).

These cards are printed on a beautiful pearl paper (not standard photo paper), the front is the card style you select and the printing is a full 5x7. In print these cards look amazing and 5x7 on the back can be saved as a gift.

Option #2- SINGLE SIDE photo paper cards- $1.00 per card (any increments)

This is the economy option I am offering. These cards can be printed on matte or glossy photo paper on one side only, and come with envelopes.

Luthi Family (a SUPER session)

What is a Super session you ask?? Well this great family belongs to a good friend of mine Melinda. Melinda is a fabulous hair dresser, Scensty candle rep, and mother of 2 1/2 beautiful kids. Melinda also referred two of my ALL time favorite clients Jason & Paige whose wedding I photographed in June. Melinda earned a free family session for the referral and she used it on an extended family event. So we shot the whole family, each individual family, individuals of kids, and her very pretty little sister's Senior images (imaege to post soon). It was a SUPER session and everyone was tired when we finished, but I like the results. Photographing large family groups is a challenge, and sometimes it is hard to feel very creative but everyone likes to have a picture of the most important people in their lives. Their will be a lot of couples getting engaged in the upcoming Holiday month...if you would like a free session, send someone my way.

Keep your eye out for new things coming: a new website, new fresh logo, a studio, and more. I have pretty much just depended on "word of mouth" advertising in the past for photography work. However, this year I enjoyed photographing Senior's so much that I decided to take out a little advertisement in a couple of Copper Hills High School programs. It features my new logo designed by Heather. I hope to have the new website up by the end of the month.

This is the 2nd time I have been given the opportunity to photograph this family...this time with extended family too! Zach (the Dad) is my 2nd cousin, and his wife and little girls are AMAZING. His little family has been on quite a journey this year. His oldest daughter Sadie was diagnosed with a rare inoperable brain tumor. They have suffered much but have the faith to move mountains!

What a fun day this was. Tyler & Mercedes are so GREAT. I just loved her flowers, and this girl has such a great sense of style. Best Wishes to the two newly- weds!!! Lyndee and I had fun playing with the 2 new lenses we have added to the group. The 85mm 1.4 is smokin', and I love just being a fly on the wall with the 70-200mm 2.8. This was the 1st of three wedding's for Lyndee and I, all in one week!

Lyndee (the best assistant ever) and I had the opportunity to attend a program called FREE TO SUCCEED by a very awesome photographer named David Jay. It really was not about technical stuff (lighting, exposure, etc.) but more about workflow, managing time, creating relationships, and "buzz" marketing. It was a great reminder to me to constantly be evaluating were I want to take my photographic life, and remember to balance work and other important aspect of life. Thanks Lyndee for being such a great friend, a fabulous assistant (with a creative eye), and inspiring me to continue to pursue things in this crazy industry. I feel like the last year I have improved a bit, and want to always learn, experiment, and enjoy what I do.

I had just finished up with Maddux's one year old session and decided since I had all of my equipment, I'd stop to see if my good friend Becky wanted a quick sessions for her little newborn Alivia. (she lives next door to the studio I use.) We only had about 10-15 minutes of good sunlight left so I snapped a few and here is what I got.
